Chequamegon Bay Protection Pledge

I recognize 10 percent of the world’s fresh surface water resides in Lake Superior and is one of America’s most precious natural resources.  Freshwater is a resource vital to our region’s economic and physical health. The protection and restoration of our local watersheds and Chequamegon Bay is an essential public health, economic and environmental imperative and critical to our quality of life.

I recognize that our waters and air are vulnerable to potential damage posed by Concentrated Animal Feeding Operations (CAFOs) sited in our local watersheds that flow into the Chequamegon Bay and Lake Superior.

CAFOs present numerous and well-documented threats to communities around the country: illness, algal blooms, contamination of groundwater and private drinking water supplies, record beach closings and fish consumption advisories, habitat loss and millions of dollars in economic damage.

I recognize that investing in the protection of the Chequamegon Bay Region and Lake Superior Basin is not only sound policy, but also has significant economic benefits for our region, our state and our country.

As a citizen who values the Chequamegon Bay Region and Lake Superior Basin, I recognize the importance of protecting our resources and I pledge to support candidates, elected officials and organizations whose efforts and policies will maintain the integrity of our water and air from potentially harmful impacts of CAFOs.
