Join Mary Dougherty for an evening of photography, poetry (not her own, don't worry) and storytelling. She's the mother of five, former restaurant owner, future cookbook author, current CAFO fighter and devout lover of community, family, good food, dogs, and Lake Superior.
She moved from St. Paul to Bayfield in 2007 and soon opened a restaurant. In the process of 'living the dream', she discovered that dreams can be a real pain the neck and restaurant life wasn't all it was cracked up to be. After five years she sold her share in the restaurant to focus on raising her five children and started to re-discover the intense beauty of her region through photography.
Over the next 3 years, she found magic in the natural world through the lens of her camera, wisdom in poems and essays that came into her life, nourishment in cooking for folks who found their way into her kitchen, joy in watching her kids grow up, and a serious distaste for 'regulatory certainty' and factory farming. It's been a helluva journey but it certainly has not been boring or linear.
It was through this process of surrender and following a breadcrumb trail with way-markers of poetry, photos, friends, family, meals around her table and wild places that she found herself exactly where she needed to be. She's learned there is no 'it' in life, there's only what's next and if our words and actions are filtered through honesty, bravery and compassion, all will be well. Even if we don't believe it....
